Komitas, 1946
For Hovhannes Sharambeyan, Komitas was a figure of special significance. Through his work, the Armenian melodies, songs, and dances that nourish the Armenian spirit found a renewed and distinctive expression. Komitas’s art was also one of the important influences that deepened Sharambeyan’s love for folk art.
From his student years, Sharambeyan was deeply drawn to the figure of the great musician and was among the few artists who addressed the theme of Komitas during the Soviet period. It is therefore no coincidence that Sharambeyan’s graduation work was also dedicated to Komitas. In its small-scale sketch, the landscapes and characters evoked by Komitas’s songs seem to come to life
